Page 21-40 Question #4, How does there invention of and the playing of Blitzball impact/influence the relationship between Finny and Gene?"

The invention of Blitzball is changing the relationship between Finny and Gene in a bad way. Finny invented the game, and makes up the rules along the way, which bother Gene. On page 39, it says, "To escape the wolf pack which all the other players became he created reverses and deceptions and acts of sheer mass hypnotism which were so extraordinary that they surprised even him."(Knowles 39). This quote shows how Finny doesn't want to get tackled so he makes up rules, so that he will never be caught with the ball or ever have to be chased by the rest of the boys. On page 39, it says, "Still mine? Nobody else has had the ball but me, for God sakes!"(Knowles 39). This quote shows how Gene is getting frustrated with all of the rules that Finny is making up. Each time a rule is being made up/changed, it is always because Finny is making changes so he can't be tackled, and each change he makes always leaves Gene with the ball, resulting in Gene becoming more frustrated.

Do you think that Finny is trying to make Gene mad on purpose? If so , why because I thought they were friends?

  1. The invention of playing Blitzball impacted the relationship between Finny and Gene only by making it stronger. Gene explains that Finny was always the best at everything he did and no one else would ever be as good as him, "He had made it up, hadn't he? It needn't be surprising that he was sensationally good at it, and that the rest of us were more or less bumblers in our different ways" (Knowles 40). In this passage, Gene is explaining that Finny made up the game so it was no wonder he was the best at it. Personally, I don't think this impacted their relationship at all because in the end, Gene ended with, "I was glad of that too. Naturally. He was my roommate and my best friend" (Knowles 40). By this quote, the author is making it clear that the game didn't impact the relationship at all in the negative. The game only made Gene more aware of how proud he was of his best friends attitude and personality.

  2. The invention of blitzball brought everyone closer together. As gene says "blitzball was the surprise of the summer. Everybody played it" (Knowles 39). Finny is naturally good at most sports presented to him he just happened to be particularly god at this one, everyone accepted him as the most athletic. "A form of it is still popular at Devon" (Knowles 39) this portrays that they all had fun with the sport and it helped them in the long run. Did Finny make this as a game where he could excel or out of mere defiance and curiosity.
