Galvin Chapter 6 pages 72-85 Re-read the last sentence of chapter 6 (p84-85). Explain what is happening in the quote (establish context) and then explore and explain the last part “I lost part of myself to him then, and a soaring sense of freedom revealed that this must have been my purpose from the first: to become part of Phineas” (85).

Gene wants to become good at sports for finny, because he can't participate in them anymore. Finny's life previous to the accident revolved around sports. Finny will now want his best friend to do that for him so sports are still a big part of his life. When finny calls Gene he ends with "if i can't play sports you're going to play them for me" (Knowles 85). Finny needs to give his dreams to Gene to see someone close to him succeed at sports. Gene was trying to avoid sports because they reminded him about what happened to Finny, but the phone call from Finny changed Gene's mindset and now he'll try extra hard at sports. Will Gene's shift in thinking cause him to miss out on valedictorian or lower his grades?

  1. I agree, but I do not think Gene's goal of becoming a valedictorian will become less of a priority. As read on page 85, "To become part of Phineas" (Knowles 85), means more than letting go of your old self to be him. I believe Gene will not only be able to achieve good grades, but now have a motivation to not just be an assistant manager for the crew team as a senior. Gene's last year at Devon has just begin, and to have Finny relying on him to succeed in athletics and grades, Gene will not fail.
