Alex Chapter 3/4 Question 3

In pages 52-54 Gene's view of his relationship with Finny is changed. In these pages Gene uses the word enmity to describe his relationship with Finny, "you are even in enmity" (Knowles 53). In this quote Finny has just told Gene that he has no chance at being top in the class for grades and Gene is trying to find an activity that he is better than Finny at. He gets to this quote "even in enmity" because he realizes that Finny has been trying to sabotage his grade all along with things like the SSSSS. When Gene and Finny were going to the meeting every night Gene felt like he could not say no and that he had to go to the meetings to fit in. This situation could be compared to To Kill A Mockingbird when Jem and Dill wanted to play the Boo Radley game and made Scout play it with them even when she did not want to. Gene is being Pier pressured into going to all these meetings and hanging out with Finny all the time because everyone else is and Finny makes it seem like they are best friends. In these pages the relationship of Gene and Finny changed in Gene's mind from being best friends to a relationship of enmity.

  1. I agree that Finny and Gene's relationship has changed by the end of the chapter but i don't think Finny was really trying to sabotage his grade. On page 58 Finny said, "I didn't know you needed to study, i didn't think you ever did. I though it just came to you" (Knowles 58). Finny wanted to hang out with Gene not really sabotage his grades. To Finny athletics just come naturally and he was probably just thinking Gene is the same in academics.
