Bayard pg40-60 Question 3

On pages 52-54 how does Gene's view of their relationship change? What does he think of it? How do you know this? Why does he feel this way? Do you think it is accurate? Why or why not?

In chapter four, Gene takes a step back to look at Gene and Finny's relationship. As Gene is reading a textbook, he thinks to himself "then we would both have come out on top, we would be even, that was all. We would be even..." (Knowles 52). After thinking this, Gene realizes that he only wanted to be even with Finny. Gene later thinks "You and Finny are even already." (Knowles 53). For a rivalry to be a rivalry, both sides have to be even. The Celtics and the Lakers each have the most amount of NBA championships in the league, they are (used to be) even. Gene and Finny are even, even though it is at two different things. Finny is great at sports, and Gene is great in academics.
Gene later says "Finny had deliberately set out to wreck my studies" (Knowles 53). Gene has this idea that Finny has created the Super Suicide Society and blitzball to take away from Gene's studying time. This could possibly have been the case, because it has taken time away from his studying and since these he has already flunked one test. However, Finny also acts like he has no idea about what's going on when Gene talks about not being able to study. In the end however, Gene still leaves his textbook to join Finny at the tree. This was either lucky for Finny or he meant to talk like that in order to get Gene to go with him.
Finny and Gene's relationship is based on a rivalry and it used to work, now however, Gene thinks he has figured out Finny's game, and the relationship is not working for now.
