Alex assingment #7 question #2

In this chapter Gene wants to enlist in the army with Binker, but Finny has come back to be his roommate. The conversation between Gene, Brinker, and Finny about enlisting in the war started off by being very awkward when Gene would not disclose to Finny what Brinker was talking about. "You know what I'm talking about well enough" "No I don't" (Knowles 106)  This is Gene denying that he had talked to Brinker about enlisting in the army. He is denying this because Finny is there. Gene most likely would have left to the war if Finny hadn't come back when he did. Gene probably wanted to leave to the war to try to run away form his problems. he might never wanted to own up to his misshaping with Finny so he tried to run away and escape one line of fire by entering another. later in the conversation the tane changes and things like this are being said, "I wouldn't enlist with you if you were General MacArthur's eldest son.". this is when Gene has changed sides from enlisting with Brinker to never going to think about it again with Finny. Gene changed his mind and now wants to stay with the person who has been one of his best friends.
